2006 Small Ruminant Pasture-Based Performance Test

Western Maryland Research & Education Center, Keedysville, MD

June 10 - October 7, 2006

The Western Maryland Research & Education Center in Keedysville, Maryland, will begin a pasture-based performance testing program for small ruminants in 2006. The 2006 test will be open to male goats of any breed or breed cross, born between December 15, 2005, and March 15, 2006 (inclusive). Producers may consign up to 5 goats, for a maximum test group of 50. The test will be open to out-of-state breeders, but Maryland producers will have the option to fill half of the test. Goats must be delivered to the test on June 10.

The goats will be managed as a single group on pasture, with no supplementation, other than free choice minerals. They will be handled every two weeks to determine FAMACHA© eye scores and the need for deworming. They will be weighed every 28 days to determine rate-of- gain. Fecal samples will be collected at 0, 28, and 56 days to determine differences in parasite resistance. The test will conclude on October 7. Goats must be picked up on October 7.

The test is now open for nominations. A fee of $75 will be charged for each goat tested. $20 per goat is due at the time of nomination. The nomination period will close on May 20.
