Targeted Grazing

Targeted grazing, also called "prescribed grazing" is a natural approach to vegetation management. Sheep and goats are well-suited to targeted grazing because of their small hooves, selective grazing behavior, and preference for upland grazing. The Maryland Small Ruminant Page [sheepandgoat.com] is a privately-owned web site. It was created in 1998 as an information portal for sheep and goat producers and anyone else interested in small ruminant production. The web site includes original documents and images as well as a comprehensive list of links pertaining to small ruminants and related topics. The web site was developed and is solely maintained by Susan Schoenian, Extension Sheep & Goat Specialist at the University of Maryland's Western Maryland Research & Education Center in Keedsyville, Maryland. Susan has been with University of Maryland Extension since 1988. She earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Animal Science from Virginia Tech and Montana State University, respectively. Susan raises purebred and crossbred Katahdin sheep on a small farm she calls The Baalands in Clear Spring, Maryland.
